Sunsets & Hurricanes In Hawaii

"The time is always right to do what is right"

- Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Flying into Kona during sunset was a little scary for me. While the sun was setting the view was breathtaking from the plane. When it got dark, I felt like I was in a Jurassic Park film. As we were descending, I saw many dark shapes. I told my girlfriend that they were mountains or hills like we were landing in some sort of valley. Later she convinced me that they were not hills but clouds. I don't know if it was because I was just waking up, but you couldn't tell me those were not mountains or hills.

Once on the ground the first night it did nothing but rain, and I really couldn't enjoy the Hawaii scenery let alone tell where I was. I noticed the speed limits were very low. Never saw anything above 40 mph I believe. The Big Island has many hills that you can drive up and as you look down you will get an amazing city-view surrounded by the ocean. I rented a convertible and wore tank tops throughout the trip. I didn't realize how much the sun would tear into my back with the top dropped. Lesson Learned!! Lol

Anyway, the atmosphere was totally different than that of the mainlands. It was extremely calm. I didn't see any police while I was on the island. Every day the sunsets were AMAZING. Sometimes you do not even want to capture any photos or footage with your phone or camera, but just take a few minutes to live in the moment. During the end of the trip, two hurricanes started making their way to the Big Island, Hurricanes Madeline and Lester. I didn't know what this meant for people's travel plans, but I was hoping for the best.

I have never been in a hurricane before and didn't know what the procedure for it was. As time went on, I began to get more comfortable when the locals weren't fearful at all. They said hurricanes come and go all the time but never really do any damage because of all the mountains and hills. My family called to check and see if the hurricanes had hit the island and also see if I was safe. My response to my mother was that I am at the beach having the time of my life. I wasn't going to let any hurricane fear halt my vacation. There were young kids around five years old deep in the ocean surfing and whatnot. Hurricane Madeline and Lester were the last things on my mind. LOL
